      DESCRIPTION

Ezo Shika are Japanese deer that live in Japan's northern Hokkaido region. Larger than all other Shika subspecies, this deer lives an extra rugged life in mostly snowy areas. For centuries the indigenous Ainu people have hunted them as a major food source and armorers incorporated the robust deerskin into samurai armor. Today deerskin can still be found being used in making kendo and kyudo bogu.
To make our boots using Ezo Shika deerskin two layers must be used. The liner being an oiled tanned leather, and the outer shell being a waxed finished tanning that's burnished. The Ezo Shika are wild deer and the leather is not corrected at all. The natural grain will especially appeal to leather enthusiasts.

John Lofgren Bootmaker Mohawk moccasin boots are utilitarian luxury. The original moccasin hunting boot dates from the early 1900s and has been a staple for outdoorsmen, farmers and construction workers in one style or another ever since. Our particular Mohawk moccasin is mainly influenced from a 1930s design. That's where the similarities end. The John Lofgren Bootmaker Mohawk moccasin has a handsewn toe and is built to be as comfortable as they are solid. No room for shortcuts in construction or materials. The uppers are Ezo Shika deerskin, the mid-soles are always real leather, never plastic. We use real cork filler, never inferior materials like cardboard. All materials that go into our footwear come from suppliers that manufacture in the USA, Japan, England, France, Germany and Italy. And of course, like all John Lofgren Bootmaker footwear, are totally built in Japan with master craftsmanship in all details.
