Leather, Lasts, Cutting, Sewing & Lasting
At John Lofgren Bootmaker, craftsmanship begins long before the first stitch. From sourcing the finest leathers to shaping balanced lasts, every detail reflects our commitment to quality. Guided by tradition and skilled hands, we build footwear that’s both comfortable and enduring.

#1-1
Leather Selection
We begin with leathers chosen not only for their exceptional quality but for their character, leathers that tell a story and grow richer with age. Each hide is carefully selected to suit the purpose of the design, with how it will wear and patina over time being just as important as its look and feel on day one. Our leathers come from some of the world’s most respected tanneries in Japan, the USA, and Europe, where generations of craftsmanship and tradition are still alive and well.

#1-2
Last Selection
The last is one of the most important elements in creating comfortable footwear. And comfort is one of the things John Lofgren Bootmaker is known for. While many of our lasts draw inspiration from vintage footwear, they are far from simple reproductions. Each last is the result of a careful and time-tested process: refining fit, balancing proportions, and ensuring lasting comfort without sacrificing a classic silhouette. No last is approved until John himself is satisfied that it meets our exacting standards for comfort and wearability.

#1-3
Cutting
Leather is a natural material, and no two hides are exactly alike. Each one carries its own character and variation, reflecting the life of the animal. Our craftspeople carefully study every hide, selecting the right areas for each part of the boot or shoe, balancing strength, beauty, and how the leather will wear over time. This thoughtful approach honors the animal by making the best use of the hide and minimizing waste, ensuring that each cut serves a purpose and nothing is taken for granted.

#1-4
Sewing
Stitching is where function and design meet, holding the structure together while adding subtle beauty to each pair of boots and shoes. At John Lofgren Bootmaker, stitch work is approached with the same care as every other step in the process: intentionally designed to complement the overall silhouette and character of the footwear. We use a high stitch count for durability and refinement, and thoughtfully choose thread thickness and color to suit each design. Every row of stitches is placed by skilled hands with care and purpose, reflecting the pride and attention to detail that define true craftsmanship.

Lasting
Lasting is the stage where the boot or shoe begins to take its true shape. The insole is secured to the last, and the carefully sewn upper is pulled over and formed around it, a crucial step that directly impacts both fit and comfort. This process demands steady, skilled hands and a sharp eye to ensure that the shape is balanced, the tension is correct, and the integrity of the silhouette is preserved. Our experienced craftspeople take great care to ensure that the left and right shoes of every pair match perfectly. No shortcuts, no guesswork, just precise, consistent craftsmanship.
